I honestly do not care for cats, but unfortunately, five of them have been dumped on me. I live in the country and city people come out here to dump their unwanted animals. These are the people who will tell their kids they found their cat/dog a good home on a farm in the country. What they’ve actually done is dump the animals near a farm that may have a barn or that may have kids there.
The animals must then fend for themselves and the dump-er is free from responsibility. Many of the animals would be far better off being taken to the SPCA where they may have the chance of being adopted. Some animals find their way to farms. Some starve. Some are taken by other animals. It is not fair for the animals or the people that they are dumped on.
Two cats that came to our farm are declawed. Farmers like us now have the responsibility of feeding the animal and caring for it, sometimes spending hundreds of dollars on animals just because they need treatment or need to be spayed/neutered. Additionally, we have to take the animals to the clinic for yearly vaccinations. One in particular, we got because the neighbor’s friend asked if we wanted it. It had been causing problems at his buddy’s house. (An apparent drop off—got into the garage and was tearing up stuff)
The cat is smoke gray in color, hence the name “Smokey”. The cat is just plain goofy. He chases herons and lands in the pond. He will drink anyone’s beer if the glass is left within reach. He will sneak into anyone’s car if the windows are left open. This happened one evening and our visitor said to me whispering.. “I think there’s an animal in my car!!!” We weren’t sure if it was a skunk or squirrel or a cat. She moved slowly, to find… it was the cat. Family members describe this cat as: “one of a kind”.
